Bookkeeping and accounting are both a very important aspect of every business, either big or small. Therefore there is a huge demand of bookkeepers all over the world. It has been estimated by the Bureau of Labor statistics (U.S) that the demand for bookkeepers would continue to grow by ten percent till 2018. Also with the coming up of new accounting laws, it has become compulsory to maintain proper accounts, which requires specialized knowledge and expertise. So also the bookkeepers are held in high esteem by every organization. The job of a bookkeeper includes verifying balance receipts, maintaining payrolls, posting debts and credits and above all recording the financial transactions in order to determine the position of business.
In order to take up bookkeeping as a career one needs to acquire a Certification in bookkeeping from a recognized institute or University such as ICB (institute of certified bookkeepers). Bookkeeping icb courses are available in various forms, such as distance learning, online and college courses. A student taking up Bookkeeping course must be very selective at the time of choosing the institute as well as the course type. Today there are numerous institutes offering bookkeeping courses, but not all of them provide accredited courses. Also before selecting a particular course students should evaluate the various types of programs available in bookkeeping. Generally, Bookkeeping and accounting programs are offered in1, 2 and 4 year courses.
Before deciding between an ICB certificate course and degree program in bookkeeping, students should also take into account the duration of the course. Certificate icb courses are of shortest duration and mostly finish within a year. However, Associate's degree programs are a little comprehensive course and take around two years for completion, and bachelor's degree program is the most advanced course and takes up four years. So depending upon one’s requirement and availability of time one must select a course in bookkeeping.
Another aspect to consider before taking up a course is Class scheduling and timing. Many bookkeeping institutes offer online courses available at night-and-weekend, and are best suited by those who are working or have other commitments to look up to.
